A COME BACK ...............
i really missed blogging, though one can call it a come back after one year,
entering in to the final year of M.B.B.S is somewhat different than other years.
Believe me you just get worked up listening to rumours and stories around about how tough medical college is.
when you step into the medical college for the first year, you will hardly understand anything,
The professors also impress on students how tough first year is, and how much importance you
need to give it and surprisingly all students fresh from school will eat up every word of what the professors say.
And then comes the real college life--------" intro and living in hostel" gives you a thrilling
experience, though for a girl it more of depends on your gang of friends and for a boy in medical school, it is a turning point in life.
yes a turning point,
you will surprised to see how many end up being hooked to "pis aller " intoxicating ethanol.
i dont know if it is the trend followed or a tradition passed from the seniors to the juniors.
It would really appear sardonic to see that the medicos who see so many alcoholics turning up with all organ failures continue to drink despite knowing their adverse effects.
Continuing with our first year fear where one grapples with the subjects and finally by the end of first year they have got the knack of medicine seeing the dissection and working with samples of fluids in biochemistry .
And next comes Second year, with its mammoth 1 1/2 years duration course,
which leaves you answering everyone you know - why the course is so long and why the
discrepancy between your medical course and engineering course.
And i suspect some of them dont believe this and end up thinking you having arrears or that you are building some cock and bull story. Atleast the ones reading this please spare another second year from this question .
Let me explain why it the duration is so long, we have three subjects in first year and in second
year the subjects becomes four and we also have pathology . Anyone who is seen the Robins
book will not ask anymore question. For those who havent seen that book , let me give an
example : consider it like this, if you throw Robins book on your enemy's head it would be sufficient enough to cause fracture of his or her skull. that much big it is.!!
And once yu get through--- watching the post mortem and staining the bacteria which is quite fun , because the microscope will never work and it is mroe of pouring stain on each other.
After having sailed through second year, comes your third year,
we were told that third year is the best time of your life, where you get so many days off and you can take as many holidays as you want and you can pass you third year in a jiffy without any work at all, this was the version told to us, but this turned out to be a shocker for our batch.
You see they changed the rules and we had double posting in the three subjects and atttendance also became strict, in the end do you know how we were??
we attended full postings all throughout the year, attended classes till five in evening and no off time. And when the results came it was like a blow out of the water, usually third year is a cake walk but our batch luck this time there was strict correction.
Then comes our final year which is always terrifying to a medico, they say there are two tough rivers you have to cross in medical college, the first year and the final year, now that i have come this far, and when you feel like taking a deep breath then comes the second seismic shock you are not to rest this year, you will have to work up and do your best only then can you clear this final hurdle. right from listening to how to study and what to study , you get everyone's advice on how to do better .
And in between the hours you get between the postings you can catch up with your friends, or during the trekking walk to og(obstetricsand gynecology) posting you can have good discussion on what to do with your friends and unit mates.
Well talking about unit mates, i must say this year one has good time in their own units, the unit mates have fun throwing the chance of taking the case presentation on one another. I must mention my dear friend Gracia ( the na.... walk lady) who ends up taking the first case in her unit . Either her unit mates are cleverer and force her to take case when they dont want to or she is innocous enough to accept whatever they tell her.
I do have gala time with my friends laughing and cracking jokes on each other during the "op" time and still manag to see cases.
Finally i am just getting to understand that if one decides what they want exactly they will get it . With a set goal and with a plan one is bound to get what they want. And ofcourse the factor of procastination, distraction, enjoyment, family all comes but one needs to take charge and fulfil their duty and keep GOING ON......... GOING ON.........

Having an allergy?
Yesterday I saw an old lady who came with complaints of pain in shoulder. As
we were asking her, she was so well equipped with information, i mean she was
able to give answers to any questions we asked her and this is great because
this makes the work easier for the doctor to come to diagnosis and give the
correct treatment and what was more she was even telling the names of drugs
like paracetamol and wax bath etc, mind you she is 68 yrs old and her
education would not be much but still her curiosity to know things and learn
things has helped her to be active and also has helped the doctor.
See if you have otherwise have fun
One can help their doctor by telling exactly when their complaint started and
how it has progressed and have they taken any medication before which had
relieved them and if you happen to remember the name, it would be good.
And another thing of utmost importance is any history of allergy, meaning,
did you happen to have any allergy to any drugs in the past, or if you have
Asthma, Hypertension, Diabetes, or any allergy to pollen or dust or to any medicine
or hypersensitvity to
anything, it requires that you inform your doctor immediately.
Why this is so important after all it is an allergy, but there have been lots of cases where patients
have lost their life due to allergy to some medicines, so it is always better to have a patch test
done. And also equip your doctor about your allergy to any medicine.
The doctor doing the patch test
Remember these things are not alarming by themselves and there is nothing to
panic, for example if anybody has allergy to aspirin or penicillin, the doctor
would just change to another medicine for treatment. Or if you happen to
have asthma, the doctor would take care in not giving analgesics to you
because that can have adverse effects, it is not like having any allergy is
embarrassing or something. If someone is well aware of their body and their
reactions it becomes easier for them and also for their doctor to treat.
Remember every person is different not only externally in looks, hair,
fingerprints, genes, but also the way a person perceives things, What looks
beautiful to me might not look beautiful to other. So different individuals
have different requirements and all it requires is adjusting the medicine or
treatment accordingly.
That is the beauty of nature, where everyone is different from others and
have a self of their own.

ARE YOU GRIM ? OR ARE YOU SMILING?
" Afraid to look at it" ?
Well well, after a long time, atlast Iam ready to write and continue my flow of thoughts.Lately
there had been certain hitches with many things coming up but as we all know life goes on and
that one must have to catch up with it’s pace.
Recently one thing that caught my attention was the state
of the people coming to hospital (patients) and their relatives, meaning the mental statethey are in and their grim expressions.
" So distanced"!!
I am sure you can understand this, because we all know that people approach hospital or a doctor only when they have reached the furthest extreme stage whatever it could be whether a disease of body or of mind.
" Hiding behind - are you ?"
I mean nobody goes to a doctor saying –“ Doctor! I want to be healthy, what should I do to be
so”.Nor do they come for ensuring continued health.
" This is what we call the end stage"
Why I am stressing ,so much on this is that, this has become a pattern over generations, over
time that this habit has been inculcated in us that a person goes to a doctor only when he is sick.
And he ends up going to the doctor with all end stage disease. So if anybody says that they are
going to a doctor so much pain, anxiety and anguish is attached to the visit.
Just imagine you go to a hotel and you order your favorite pizza or favorite dish and while eating
it you associate pain suddenly with it and eat it dismally, will the food benefit you? Definitely NO
!! Right.
So eventhough it is understandable that one has the anxiety about whether they will be cured
and whether they will be able to foot the bills , whether everything will be alright. Things will
happen with it’s own course whether you worry or don’t worry and the one thing that is under
your control is that you can efficiently manage whatever situation arises according to your
adequacy. It is surprising that once a patient enters the atmosphere of hospital their face takes
on a grim expression and their mind is full of confusion and random thoughts, you hardly come
across any person smiling at you unless of course you are strong of mind and have the belief that
you will be cured.
So what my take back “Home message” is that whenever you go to a hospital , see if you can
smile, (test it J ) and if you cannot see if you can plant a smile on some others face,
I assure you your single face would be sufficient to light the faces of so many whoever you would
be meeting. And dont be surprised if the doctor also smiles at you!!
And at the end of the day you would be happy that you have not only changed yourself but also
have made a difference to others life. And that is what life is all about Growing yourself and
helping people around you. Right? J
"Iam growing well , how about you?"

EXAM TIME ...........
HI FRIENDS, EXAM TIME………….
It is exam time and hence I kept off my blog page , yet to face
exams in February , so getting geared up for exams and this blog is
for my friends who are from medical field and for those who are
not, iam sure they would enjoy going through it and enjoy how the
mneumonics are made………
Let us go through Pharmacology now
Mesmerised by the opiod effects and want to remember all of its
effects…………..??
Then think that opiods “ BURN BAD AMERICANS”
B - Bradycardia and hypotension
N - Naloxone and Naltrexone antagonize opiods
B - Biliary smooth muscle constriction and spasm of sphincter
Of oddi
A - Anti tussive effect, cough suppression
D - Depression of deep tendon reflexes
A - Analgesic effect
M - Miosis ( constriction of pupil)
E - Euphoria
R - Respiratory depression
I - Increased Intracranial pressure
C - Constipation
A - Acute opiate intoxication- A- Anaphylaxis, ARDS- Acute
Respiratory Distress syndrome, A- Aspiration pneumonitis
N - Nausea and vomiting
S - Sedation
So friends remember AMERICANS, if any opiod is mentioned the next time.
The opiods namely includes morphine etc.

FOR SOME REAL CAUSE.........
Finally, the strike has been called off. And all my friends from
non-medical community were asking “why did you call off the
strike? Has all your demands been met”? And there were some of
my friends enquiring , “ why cant you medicos work in rural areas,
isn’t serving people your duty?”
And what do you think my emotions would have
been………Anger? Pity? Irritation? Exasperation?
……….,
what I was feeling was Sadness………., why sadness -because the
public isn’t aware of the real reason as to why we striked in the
first place.
Iam sure the public is much aware of the fact that as in no other
profession, medical field requires a time span of 5 ½ years to
complete the under graduation itself and if the pg and further
higher studies were to be considered, it would take 13 ½ years .
And on top of this if they were to increase it by 1 more year, they
are in fact not only delaying the students from passing out but are
also deterring the younger generation from entering this field.
Already this year many students have left their medical seats and
opted for engineering which is not only attractive in its pay packet
but is also attractive in terms of the time required which is only 4
yrs. Do you know that till now not one student has complained of
the meager salary that is given to them which is only Rs.4200/-.
Even a government sweeper is paid around 5000 but what have the
medicos got ?
They are just happy to cure the patients coming to
them and the satisfaction that they are really doing something.
What is more pitying is that the medical students are asked to
work in rural areas as a student without giving the students their
degree , it is like asking all the students learning car to drive the
government buses just because they cant employ qualified drivers
to drive them or asking the engineering students to build buildings
because they cant employ qualified engineers for work. Wouldn’t
this endanger the people’s lives? Wouldn’t it be better if they
posted doctors in villages which would be really beneficial to
people.
And what is more , the medicos are all ready to work if
they are posted as doctors. Which is more better , posting doctors
or posting students?
Surely DOCTORS, Right!
The public’s warm gesture in showing their solidarity with us has
been overwhelming , to see that atleast they have understood our
plight!
But still after all this medical students are continuing their
education to serve the people and the needy, keeping the health of
the people in their mind. Now iam sure that everyone would have
understood what is the purpose of medicos and their real cause.
Iam sure the public and the society stands with the medical
students who have dared to enter the medical field inspite of so
many demands asked of them and face so many challenges for no
fault of theirs. The students are really thankful to those and
everyone for understanding their plight and for supporting them.

ADVERSITY.........
This little girl is none other than Farah ahmedi, from
who became a victim of war . Today she earns in dollars
and do you know what is so wonderful about that , Because she
doesn’t know to read and write , yet because of her belief and
confidence she is now settled in
and is living a life of a winner. Though she was handicapped , she
could’nt be handicapped in her mind, for which she has been
rewarded well for being courageous in the face of adversity.
Farah now can walk with the help of prosthetics , thanks to the
world of medicine and engineering she now lives her life of
dreams , she still remembers the moment when she refused to wear
prosthetics and thanks the nurses in
operated and fit with the limbs because if it had not been for them,
it wouldn’t have allowed her so much of freedom.
She is a living example of a person who has endured so much pain
at such a tender age and has had the courage to face the death of
her father and sisters in the war and it was not over with that, her
brothers are missing and she has no clue as to where they are, but
still she lives with hope and happiness and is glad that she was able
to save her mother atleast. Doesn’t this tell us how much brave and
solemn this girl must have been to face so many adversities in her
life. Sometimes I wonder we all are so lucky to have been taken
care of by our parents but still feel mutinous if one of our wishes
were not fulfilled. So the next time you feel so, remember Farah
and thank the God for giving you so many luxuries in life. God has
certainly blessed all of us in keeping our loved ones well. Thank
God and Mother nature.

ADVERSITY IN LIFE
ADVERSITY IN THE FACE OF HOPE AND BEAUTY
What does this picture remind you of ?? Of beauty and nature……
And so on , so was this little girl amazed by the beauty of nature
continued to gaze at the sky and the clouds , lost in thought
mesmerized in it’s beauty. But nature had other plans for her…
She ran off to school to listen to her teacher’s sermons about
worldwide news and other fascinating information which she loved
to hear . Unlike her counterparts in school, who got bored to listen
to classes, she took special interests in her studies. As she left for
school running through the paddy fields , there was a sudden
splash of fire in her face and she fainted, that was all she was able
to recollect later as she lay in her hospital bed. Later her family
told that she had stepped on a land mine and her leg had to be
amputated to save her. It was a devastating shock to this girl who
had dreamt of dancing with joy and run from place to place.
WANT TO KNOW WHO THIS GIRL IS?
